Homeowners Insurance

Dwelling, contents, and liability for the place you live.

Overview

What to know about home coverage.

A homeowners policy bundles coverage for your structure, your belongings, and your personal liability. The two biggest coverage mistakes are insuring for market value (what you’d sell it for) instead of rebuild cost, and under-estimating the value of contents.

What's typically covered

  • Dwelling: the cost to rebuild your home to its current state
  • Other structures: detached garage, shed, fences
  • Personal property: furniture, electronics, clothing, and belongings
  • Loss of use: living expenses if your home is unlivable after a covered loss
  • Personal liability and medical payments to guests

Things to consider

  • Insure to rebuild cost, not market value, because land doesn’t burn down
  • Standard policies exclude flood and earthquake, so add them if you’re exposed
  • High-value items (jewelry, art, collectibles) often need scheduled coverage
  • Check whether you have replacement-cost or actual-cash-value on contents

Optional add-ons

  • Water backup and sump-pump failure coverage
  • Service-line coverage for utility pipes on your property
  • Equipment breakdown for HVAC and major appliances

FAQ

Common questions.

  • What’s the difference between HO-3 and HO-5 policies?

HO-3 covers your structure on an open-perils basis but your belongings on named-perils. HO-5 covers both on open-perils, which is broader but typically a bit more expensive.
